mobile browser

Alibaba Group owned UC Browser said that it crossed 100 million monthly active users (MAUs) in India after having reached the 80 million MAU mark in June. In May this year, it had claimed to have 400 million MAUs globally.

It has added some 20 million MAUs within just 5 months, and attributes the growth to some recently launched features on its browser platform. Its ‘We Media’ feature allows users to create stories, share thoughts, and engage with other users and celebrities via UC Web browser. Users can sign up for any app under the UC Web platform using a single login ID; the company had recently launched a standalone news aggregation platform named UC News. Talking about UC Web’s new business strategy, Kenny Ye, General Manager of Overseas Group Business for Alibaba said that the the company is looking to consolidate its role as content distribution platform and will be working on inviting “opinion leaders, celebs, self-publishers” to join the We Media feature.

Most Indian users on the UC Web platform consumed entertainment based content and the company has now signed content partnerships with Colors TV and Fox Star Studios and Bollywood production houses to add more video content to its library, added Kenny in a statement. Note that Alibaba had recently floated Alibaba Digital Media and Entertainment Group with an investment of $1.48 billion into the unit. The content deals with Colors and Fox Star in India was made via the new company.

UC Browser also has an inbuilt news content aggregation feature and it recently partnered Twitter and Microsoft Bing to add aggregated cricket content on its UC Cricket feature, which provides live scores, photos, videos, reviews, etc. Apart from this, UC Browser tied up with Flipkart in April to add the ecommerce portal on its home screen along with enhanced online shopping experience for UC Web users.
