Shemaroo new media revenues at Rs 13.4 cr in Q1-FY16; 17% of revenues

Shemaroo Ltd, the Bollywood content aggregation company which listed in August last year, reported its results for the quarter ended June 30th 2015 (Q1-FY16)  with revenues of Rs 77.64 crore, of which New Media revenues accounted for Rs 13.4 crore. Even as revenues were down 10.48% quarter on quarter, though up 20.38% year on year, net profit was at Rs 12.02 crore, down 6.53% quarter on quarter, and up 25.73% year on year. The companys reported a 23.9% increase in EBITDA, to Rs. 24.48 crore, up from Rs 19.75 crore in Q1 FY15. EBITDA margin was up marginally, at 31.3% as compared with 30.5% in Q1 FY15.

New Media Revenues

New Media revenues increased 83.56% year on year and 17% quarter on quarter, while revenue from traditional sources increased 12.31% year on year, and decreased 14.67% quarter on quarter. Shemaroo’s YouTube channel ‘ShemarooEnt’ crossed one million subscribers during the quarter, and its Mobile content consumption “continued to grow on the back of operator data usage growth.”

New Media is 17.3% of total revenues for the company, while traditional revenue streams account for 82.7%. In contrast, a year ago, New Media accounted for 11.3% of revenues.

Shemaroo’s partnerships since IPO

– During the quarter, Shemaroo partnered with Red Chillies Entertainment to distribute films on TV, including Om Shanti Om, Chalte Chalte, Phir Bhi Dil Hai Hindustani, Kabhi Haan Kabhi Naa and Asoka.

– In April, Shemaroo entered into a distribution agreement with Magna Publishing Company to distribute its content over web and mobile, such as: Stardust, Savvy, Society and Health & Nutrition.

Bringing Playboy content to India: In January, Shemaroo tied up with net mobile AG to distribute content from Playboy Enterprises Inc in south Asian countries which include India, Nepal, Bhutan, Sri Lanka, Pakistan and Bangladesh. Importantly, it will be content “that adheres to the Indian regulatory framework. Note that Playboy, the magazine, is banned in India.

– It also partnered with video platform 1230n in January for bringing their content to mobile. More here.

–  In November, it partnered the music distribution platform The Orchard, to distribute and market its music catalogue on iTunes in the Middle East & North Africa (MENA) region. The partnership allows Orchard to distribute Shemaroo’s music catalogue on over 100 digital platforms, including Spotfiy, iTunes, Rhapsody, Virgin, eMusic, FR, Amazon Digital Services Inc, rDio, MediaNet, and xBox Music among others.
