BoxTV Partners Angel TV & Splentrix Solutions For Bengali Content

Times Internet’s video on demand service BoxTV has inked tie-ups with Angel TV and Splentrix Solutions to strengthen its Bengali content catalogue.

As part of the partnership, BoxTV will be offering more than 75 Bengali movies including titles like Aarohan, Bhalo Theko, Chokh, Kony, Lal Darja, Nimantran, Roudra Chaya, Chinnapatra, Agniswar, Aparajita Tumi and others on the web, its mobile apps across iOSAndroid and its Smart TV apps. The deal period or terms of the partnership were not disclosed.

Earlier this year, BoxTV had added Bhojpuri movie titles and it currently offers regional content in Bengali, Marathi and south Indian languages like Tamil, Telugu, Kannada and Malayalam.

Over the past year, BoxTV has also signed quite a few content tie-ups to possibly provide more variety to its consumers – In August, it had added National Geographic Channel (NGC) shows and documentaries for its Indian consumers and in February, it had partnered Celestial Pictures to offer more than 100 Shaw Brothers martial arts movies.  It had also partnered Sony Pictures Television and Disney UTV in the same month, to offer premium movie and television titles on its portal.

What’s currently missing though is fresh content like latest movie titles, since a majority of these tie-ups seems to be for classic titles. But, that’s a problem with other online video streaming service like Google’s YouTube, Reliance ADA’s BigFlix, and Singapore-based Spuul as well and is probably because movie studios are still wary of disturbing their theatrical and satellite revenue by offering these movies online, since the former still contributes for majority of the movie’s revenues in the country.

Remember that Kamal Haasan had tried premiering his film Vishwaroopam on DTH platforms before the theatrical premiere last year, but was forced to drop the plans after Tamil Nadu theater organizations and distributors threatened to boycott the film.
