NFDC Launches Movie Streaming Site Cinemasofindia.com

Update: An NFDC official spokesperson has clarified that the subscription and Pay Per View packages currently displayed on the Cinemas of India VOD website are under testing, and therefore not live across the site. The revised rates will be updated and live soon.

We’re not sure of how old this is, but the National Film Development Corporation (NFDC) of India appears to have launched movie streaming site Cineamasofindia.com (hat tip: @sepiaverse).

The site offers a selection of films for free that have been digitally restored, as well as video on demand movies on subscription basis and a Pay Per View (PPV) model. Note that the current catalog of movies available on the website are typically more than a decade old. In terms of discovery, users can filter movies based on genre, language, director and awards & festivals. When we checked the website, we found that typically movies that are more than a decade old are available for streaming free of cost, while users can pay to watch newer movies.

Subscription and monetization: However, when we tried to buy the subscription package the website did not display the billing details efficiently. It appears that the company is using Stripe for accepting payment and hence accepts only credit/debit card for payment. We found four types of subscription packages — $9 for a week, $12 for a month, $9 for an year and $19 for a PPV package. It’s interesting that the company offers an year of subscription for the same price of a week long subscription. While the website does not display any ads, it appears that it does on the billing pop up.

While most of the movie collection on the website is not available on other video streaming sites, India has many movie sites, still. Reliance Entertainment owned video streaming service BigFlix.com offers a subscription based on demand video service starting at Rs 99 per week and can be accessed via web and on smartphone platform such as iOSAndroid, and Windows Phone. There’s also other online video streaming services such as Eros International’s Eros Now, Times Internet’s BoxTVHungama Movies, Singapore-based Spuul, and Google’s YouTube.

In light of the state's emerging digital healthcare apparatus, how does Clause 12 alter the consent and purpose limitation model?

The collective implication of leaving out ‘proportionality’ from Clause 12 is to provide very wide discretionary powers to the state.

The latest draft is also problematic for companies or service providers that have nothing to with children's data.
